Sacred Story & Temple Heritage

Shri Dwarkadhish Mandir is one of the oldest and most visited temples in Mathura . Unlike other Krishna temples where he is worshipped as a cowherd child, here Krishna is honoured as Dwarkadhish – the crowned King of Dwarka, his royal form after he left Vrindavan . This temple is special because it completes Krishna's life story in his own birthplace – from the prisoner-child born in Mathura to the crowned king who ruled Dwarka .

The Sacred Story

The present temple was built in 1814 CE by Seth Gokul Das Parikh, the treasurer of the Gwalior Estate, with approval and donation from Maharajah Daulatrao Scindia of Gwalior . Gokul Das was a great devotee of Lord Krishna and a follower of the Vallabhacharya (Pushtimarg) sect, which still manages the temple today .

The temple follows the Pushtimarg tradition – the "path of grace" founded by Vallabhacharya . Here, the deity is served not as a distant idol but as a beloved child-prince in a household (haveli), with eight daily jhankis (darshan windows) where the deity is woken, bathed, dressed, fed, and rested .

Architecture

Style Rajasthani architecture with 72 pillars
Main Deity Lord Dwarkadhish (Krishna as King of Dwarka)
Other Deities Radha Rani and other Hindu gods

Jhanki Darshan & Aarti Timings

Dwarkadhish follows the Pushtimarg ashtayam (eight-part) seva – eight daily jhanki (glimpse) windows. The deity is dressed and fed through these windows, with the curtain drawn between them .
