Mukharvind Mandir is one of the most sacred stops on the Govardhan Parikrama. "Mukharvind" means the lotus face of Giriraj Govardhan – the spot where the hill is worshipped as the living face of Lord Krishna himself . Jatipura is the village where this famous temple is located, and it is a common starting point for the 21 km circumambulation.
Mansi Ganga is a holy tank located right next to the Mukharvind Temple. The story behind it is beautiful.
According to legend, when Krishna killed the demon Vatsasura (who had taken the form of a cow), his cowherd friends told him he needed to purify himself from the sin of killing a cow. So, Krishna brought the holy Ganga river here using the power of his mind (in Sanskrit, "mansi" means "of the mind"). He then took a dip in it and purified himself .
Another version says that Krishna's foster parents, Nand and Yashoda, wanted to take a holy dip in the Ganga. Since it was far away, Krishna brought the river to Govardhan with the power of his thoughts. When the Brajwasi's went to bathe, they even saw Mother Ganga riding her crocodile carrier. Since then, the tank has been called Mansi Ganga .
A dip in Mansi Ganga is believed to bring million times more spiritual merit – the love of Shri Krishna . The parikrama traditionally starts and ends with a dip here .
The Mukharvind Temple in Jatipura is widely recognized as the main temple where devotees come for darshan and offerings . It is the western face of Govardhan Hill.
The most special seva (service) here is the dugdhabhishek – bathing the Mukharvind (the hill's face) with milk. This is done in the lavish Pushtimarg style, where Giriraj is served as a beloved child-prince. You can watch Giriraj bathed in milk, dressed, and offered food (including Chappan Bhog) – a beautiful and unique experience .
Yes, if you visit during non-puja times, you are allowed to touch the sacred Shila (stone), pour milk over it, and pray .
There are two main Mukharvind shrines – one in Jatipura (on the western side) and one in Govardhan town (eastern side). A full parikrama takes in both, feeding Giriraj at his faces around the hill .
