Giriraj Govardhan is not just a hill — it is worshipped as Lord Krishna himself in physical form. This sacred place in Braj is where Krishna performed one of his most famous divine acts: lifting the entire hill on his little finger to protect the people of Braj from Indra's wrath .
The story of Govardhan Hill begins with Krishna's childhood. As a young boy of just seven years, he convinced the residents of Braj to stop worshipping Indra, the god of rain, and instead worship Govardhan Hill — the mountain that provided them with grass for cows and crops for food .
Indra became furious. In anger, he unleashed terrible rain and storms over Braj for days. The people turned to young Krishna for help. Then came the miracle — Krishna lifted the entire Govardhan Hill on his little finger, using it as a giant umbrella to shield everyone. For seven days, he held the hill effortlessly, protecting his devotees until Indra finally surrendered and realised Krishna was divine .
This is why even today, devotees circumambulate Govardhan Hill with deep reverence — the hill is believed to be non-different from Krishna himself .
Daan Ghati Mandir is one of the two main temples in Govardhan . It is the traditional starting and ending point of the Govardhan Parikrama .
Why the name "Daan Ghati"?
"Daan" means donation and "Ghati" means valley or pass. The name comes from a beautiful, playful pastime of Krishna. He would stand here as a "toll collector" with his cowherd friends and stop the gopis who were carrying milk, butter, and curd to the market. He would mischievously demand "daan" (toll or tax) from them — sweetly and teasingly taxing their wares. It is a tender, flirtatious love-play between Krishna and the gopis .
The Govardhan Parikrama is a 21-kilometre circumambulation around Giriraj Hill. Devotees walk barefoot in a clockwise direction, keeping the hill always on their right .
